Trail
Reconstruction
Vancouver Aquarium volunteers, the South Vancouver Neighbourhood
House Dream Green Team and the Richmond Environmental Youth Corps
got together and restored the Annacis Island wetland boardwalk.
This spectacular boardwalk takes you through the heart of the
Purfleet Point wetlands to a sandy beach along the banks of the
Fraser River. A wonderful spot!

Non-Native
Vegetation Removal
Summer 2001 was a busy time for Vancouver Aquarium volunteers,
the Richmond Environmental Youth Corps and the South Vancouver
Neighbourhood House Dream Green Team. Annacis Island is a sea
of purple in the summer months. Despite the beauty of flowering
purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicera), this non-native
plant quickly takes over and disperse native vegetation. To help
give Annacis Island's native wetland plants a chance 21 bags of
purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicera) were removed from
the site.
Great Canadian
Shoreline Clean-Up
Vancouver Aquarium volunteers along with students from Sir Charles
Kingsford Smith Elementary and Gladstone Montessori Secondary
took part in the 2001 Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up. Together
they removed trash from two kilometers of the banks of the Fraser
River, whichtotaled to an incredible 224 kilograms of garbage.
Some of the more interesting items included fishing buoys, a barbeque
grill, a pornographic magazine and a shotgun.
Industrial
Wood Removal

The same group that
participated inthe Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up also removed
industrial wood from the wetland. A total of 11,340 kg of wood were
removed, opening up valuable space for native plants to flourish
and grow.
Fish
Surveys
A group of dedicated Vancouver Aquarium volunteers have committed
themselves to early Sunday mornings of rain and mud. This hardworking
team is continuing the baseline data collection that the Vancouver
Aquarium Marine Science Centre's Waterway Enhancement Team began
in the summer of 2001. This data will be vital in assessing changes
in the health of the Fraser River Estuary over a long term basis.
