Cattail (Typha latifolia) – This marsh plant is easily recognizable by its height (up to 3m) and brown cylindrical flower spike. Notes
Saturday May 3rd - Native Planting at FRP: We had a very successful day of planting at Deas Island on April 27th, when we planted over 100 native plants! Now for Part 2 of River Works’ Spring planting, at Fraser River Park. I have marked four sites we have removed invasive species from. We will plant native trees, shrubs and grassland plants to help increase biodiversity and help prevent the invasives from moving back in.
Sunday, May 11th – Wood Debris Removal at LL: We will be removing wood debris from the shoreline with one of our partners, the Northwest Wildlife Preservation Society (NWPS). Read more about the harmful effects of wood debris on the River Works website. This is an annual event and always lots of fun!
Monday, May 12th – Wood Debris Removal at LL: For this event we will be helping NWPS lead a youth environmental stewardship camp in doing their own wood debris removal. The kids will be doing this as part of a week long camp of fun and educational environmental stewardship activities. Volunteer help appreciated for leading the youth.
Saturday May 24th and Sunday May 25th - CZC Youth Forum at VA: If you are a youth between the ages of 14 and 29, you are invited to attend the Coastal Zone Canada Youth Forum that is being held this year at the Vancouver Aquarium! This conference is a unique opportunity for youth interested in conservation issues facing our region, and as a bonus it will be subsidized for Aquarium youth volunteers! Stay tuned for details.
Sunday, May 25th – Scotch Broom Removal @ DI: We will continue our great work ridding Deas Island of its Scotch broom infestation.
See you soon :)
Sarah
