| 2007 Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
This September, River Works
participated in the Vancouver Aquarium's Conservation Program TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, by doing shoreline cleanups at three of our sites: Deas Island, Annacis Island and Iona Beach.
Good times were had by all (I hope!), and we have some impressive stats to show for it:
Total kilometers of shoreline cleaned (all 3 sites): ~2.1 km
Total # of bags of garbage collected: 17
Number of bags of recycling collected: 4
Total weight of garbage collected: 295 pounds! (and that's not including the deep freeze we had to leave at Annacis Island)
Some of the most unusual items we found this year: a Spanish lessons cassette tape, a giant traffic divider cone, a propane tank, a hair net and a tonka truck.
Great job guys! Look for nation-wide updates on this year's GCSC results on their website: go to http://www.vanaqua.org/cleanup - it is shaping up to be the best year yet, with well over 50, 000 participants signing up to clean their shorelines of litter across Canada. This means less plastic for wildlife to mistake for food or get entangled in, less harmful garbage leaking toxins into the environment, and more awareness about littering (hmm maybe some of those smokers out there will stop throwing their cig butts down storm drains?).
